Gatorskin or Gruyère?

Woodrot?
Just bought some new tyres and they both had holes like this. 'Phoned the shop to request replacements. Their stock of 700 x 23C was similarly affected. What do you suppose was the explanation?

  1. I've seen the same thing on some of my tyres (from brand new).

Always assumed is was some sort of side-effect of the manufacturing process and never had any issues with it.

  2. Mark has cracked the conundrum: they are wear indicators. He suggests it may be a new Euro regulation that requires tyres to be made with holes in them. The chaps at Geoffrey Butler were puzzled and had to check with the manufacturer.
