Next Wednesday's ride is a reflective one, giving the Wayfarers a chance to look back at the contribution that others have made to cycling in the Surrey Hills.
The Catford CC Hill climb is the oldest bike race in the world, having been held more-or-less continuously since 1887. It has been run on a number of hills in the area, Waller Hill being conveniently close to the Douglas Brunton Centre, so a good start. We'll have a go at most of these, missing out only Westerham Hill, which has lost much of its charm since the Motor Car was invented.
It's a hilly ride, but it is possible to miss out all of the test hills and still complete the route. So those that wish to express their admiration of their forebears without emulating them can easily do so.
Lunch at the Cock, Ide Hill, and tea at Fanny's, another Surrey institution. As many will know, Fanny Maiklem died in June, and the tea-room is to close next Saturday. So this will be the last chance for us to sample the tea, cakes and home-made lemonade that so many cyclists have enjoyed since the 1970s.
41 miles elevenses to tea, so a prompt start at 1100, please.
Mark
