Report for B Group - 28th June

The ride after the Dieppe Weekend can have a rather sparse turnout, so it was very pleasing that sixteen riders plus leaders had signed up, no one who registered was a DNS and we even had one extra turn up and joined the ride at the start. Pam was one of those signed in, having ridden in France and here again, and is was particularly good to see that Graham Holder had signed on too.

The route was designed not to be too taxing, rather to provide a destination not usually associated with starts from the Leatherhead Centre.

I was in charge of the first group which started at 10.30 am, travelling roughly north east we used Ashtead Common, Horton Lane and the area once referred to as The Ace of Spades to arrive in the Surbiton area. Hampton Court, Walton Bridge, Shepperton and turning right before Chertsey Bridge we followed the river and using familiar roads we arrived at The George in Staines at 12.50 pm, good timing for 22 miles!

After having been fed and refreshed at 14.00 hrs  we left the pub, retraced our route as far as Shepperton, then took the way towards Kingston and turned to Hampton. Passing the Hampton Pool we entered Bushy Park there and rode through the wonderful park, ending up at The Pheasantry Café at 15.15. Everyone that came on the ride from the group came to tea and as we were just reflecting on the day, Simon and Pete B turned to join us, a very pleasant surprise.

Many thanks to everyone in the group for making it a great time and especially to Tim G who offered and acted as back marker.

Many thanks to all.

David J

Our second group on the road today consisted of eleven cyclists, (setting off at least) from Leatherhead.

The riders were as follows: Pam Jones, Liz Bernard, Tony Hopkins, Jane Fox, Ian Williamson, Colin Garrod, Julie Buckman, Stephen Hickey, with fixed sub-leader Dave C and our two extra cyclists Diane Porter and Ray Youlden.

Diane was the first to leave our group, having successfully navigated our group through Ashtead Common.

Ray Y was the next rider to leave us, having just hitched onto our group to reach Shepperton.

Ian made it as far as Staines, citing post holiday unfitness.

Our group flowed along well, avoiding any altercations with motorists, also avoiding the numerous pot holes, which the various Councils have left unfilled to keep us alert whilst cycling.

We eventually made it to our sustenance stop at Wetherspoons in Staines, at 1.15pm. The food (and ale) was quite good and served quickly.

Having traversed the Lunar type road surface along Laleham road into Staines, we headed over Staines bridge after lunch and along Chertsey lane into Chertsey, passing by Abbey fields 😊 which brought us back onto our prescribed course. Pam left our group at Ferry Lane leaving seven of us to partake of refreshments in Bushy Park.

Thank you to all the riders who took part, and to Colin who back-marked for us.

Thanks also to the ride designer David J.

Invitation to the annual All Day Ride to Greenwich, Saturday 8 July

You are invited to this year's All Day ride to Greenwich on Saturday 8 July.

Riders will meet at 9am at Nonsuch Park and at 9am at Beddington Park and led to the official start, at MED cafe at Merton Abbey Mills, from where we will ride in groups, the first group departing at 10am.

The ride will be at a sensible urban pace.

This year's ride will be taking a new route, through Tooting  Common and Brockwell Park for elevenses.  We will visit the Herne Hill Velodrome and proceed through Dulwich and Lewisham to the view point at Greenwich Observatory.  Lunch as usual at the Dog and Bell in Deptford, returning through Evelyn Green, Folkestone Gardens, Burgess Park, Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common to pick up the Wandle Trail at Earlsfield and finish in Morden Hall Park, from where someone will lead those who need it back to Nonsuch or Beddington Parks.  Tea at Clapham Common or Earlsfield (or both!) depending upon the weather, the time, and what riders want.

Those who want to join this leisurely tour of South London, please e-mail Paulandrewjames1949@yahoo.co.uk by Thursday evening if possible.  Groups and departure times will be sent out by e-mail on Friday.

Please also say whether you will be making your own way to the start at Merton Abbey Mills, or whether you would prefer to be led there from Nonsuch Park or from Beddington Park.

As with all our club rides, regular riders need to be members of Cycling UK for insurance purposes.

'A' teams invitation to 05 July hilly ride - Cobham - Wotton - L'head

Our last two Wednesday rides were flat to pad the peak demand of the Dieppe weekend, now its time for hills!

From the convenience of Cobham, the ride goes via Staple hill, Albury/Shere Heath to Peaslake, then Hurtwood, Holmbury Hill, Pasturewood Lane, Friday Street. A set of spectacular and beautiful lanes which I would say are at their best at this time of year. Here is a view of the lake on Friday Street near dusk this evening .. two deer on the far side - idyllic!

Down Sheephouse takes us to the lunch stop..

The Wotton Hatch pub is a new venue for us. It is a fine pub with a good beer garden. I suppose many of us have driven or ridden past and thought 'looks a nice venue, should try it'. This is our chance. The lunch menu is higher priced than our usuals, and they want early pre-orders.  So please can you view the menu and send me your order ideally Saturday. I agreed to send a partial order on Saturday and an update on Sunday. Don't be put off if you can't hit those targets, it should be ok to add a few on Monday. But please I'm hoping to get most orders to them on Sat/Sunday.

On my reccie a few weeks ago I rode up Sheephouse Lane after lunch, from that experience the route is adjusted to go *down* Sheephouse to the pub then follow the A25 to Hollow Lane, that gives over a mile before the gradients restart, they're not as steep as Sheephouse. The ride continues over the general Leith Hill heights circling south-east for a grand finale with the long missed Anstie, then an easy run all the way back to Leatherhead.

Route length 39.7 miles, elevation 2,775 ft (garmin), 21.5 miles to lunch.

Please email me neilwarland43@gmail.com with your lunch order on Saturday if possible, otherwise asap after, thanks.

A group ride to Horley 28 June

It was an enjoyable meeting point for all groups in Leatherhead with freshly baked scones, rock cakes and filter coffee on offer.

Nevertheless we had to tear ourselves away to do some cycling and Dave V’s group was first away.

Ride report 28 June 2023 Leatherhead – 10.50 Group

Janice’s “almost flat” route, thoughtfully avoiding the usual climb to Headley was about as much exercise as I was looking for so soon after Dieppe.

My group of Sue F, Brian, Dave F and welcome returnee Peter Suchy were well matched. The morning explored some rarely used lanes around Horley to the extent that I wondered if we would ever get there.

Lunch at the Jack Fairman was quickly served, and good quality too, an improvement on the sometimes mixed ‘spoons experience. A little plane undercarriage spotting through Charlwood was followed by the almost flat Russ Hill, where we paused for a photo at Lowfield Heath windmill to prove we had not cheated by taking the direct route home.

We arrived at Amici in Leatherhead in good time for tea, for those who preferred to sit in the sun before journeying home.

Thanks to my group for their good company and tolerance of my navigational lapses, and especially to Peter Suchy as diligent back marker.

The next group to leave comprised Hans, Mike, Patrick, Ged and myself. Three of us still had Dieppe in our legs and so we agreed on a comfortable pace for the day and were glad of the lack of hills. Nevertheless Hans was looking uncomfortable much of the way to Horley. It turned out that a quick visit to the gents to turn his shorts the right way round was all that was needed……

Interesting to see that Dave’s report mentioned the quality of the food and I’d agree. I had a halloumi salad that I’ve had in other ‘spoons and it was way better than usual!

The return to Leatherhead had Russ Hill and then a few smaller hills that I’m sure never used to be there but we survived the journey and most of us stopped for more sustenance to fuel the final leg home.

Thanks to my group for their good company. Also to Dave V and Neil W for sub leading.

Neil W’s group was last to leave and here’s his report.

The Fairfield Centre Leatherhead went up a star this visit for serving great filter coffee, and good homebaked fare. My group comprised Neil C Clive Steve D and Dave W. Congratulations to Clive for a fine finish sailing in the Solent over the weeked, and to Dave W for his adventurous scenic rides in France, as pictured in his Strava.

We set off a few minutes before 11am, ride conditions were good but on the cycle path approaching Box Hill Steve had a puncture. He was admirably proficient and fast going about the repair, I remarked how clean his chainset was, yes, its all new after its major fail last time.

The punchbowl and other roads passed agreeably. At the top of Root Hill Lane a young woman rider asked for directions to Box Hill. She had come from Reigate, and had been riding round, lost. No sat nav or map. We assured her Punchbowl and Pixham was the way to go and gave simple instructions .. left left right. I felt a bit guilty on our return when I noticed the first left led to a farm.
The ride continued well. Lonesome Lane not so lonesome now with all the new housing, nice road surfaces which triggered Neil C's need for speed. After our first pass of Horley Neil thought we had ridden the minor roads before under near flood conditions, and I recalled a wet ride possibly led by Hans years ago. Nearing Horley we noticed a new visitor attraction, a dino nursery. Seven little dinos in there and many other colourful exotic creatures.

Dave W parted with us after a stay at spoons, and our ride back went fine, we did a reasonable pace, finished with coffees on Leatherhead High St.

Please look our for next weeks ride invite coming early and needing your attention early. Thanks!

Elevenses Start Times.

The Committee on 24th April agreed to change the departure times from elevenses. A 20 minute stagger window for B sub-groups, and 10 minutes for As was agreed. (This was to give more time for social interaction). Ride Leaders should plan their rides accordingly.

Thanks for your assistance.

Urban Hill Climb

Urban Hill Climb

URBAN HILL CLIMB, SWAIN’S LANE, N6, SATUDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2023

Ride up the infamous Swain’s Lane in the heart of North London on closed roads. The only hill climb within Greater London and an iconic event on the UK circuit.

The climb averages 8% and maxes out at 20% over 700m of tarmac, making it one of the only places within Central London for hill climb specialists to test their mettle.

Racers, families, Bromptons and cargo bikes all shoulder to shoulder battling up the 20% gradients. Whether you’re racing, riding for fun or simply spectating, this is an event with an incredible atmosphere and a great day out for all.

Group B Ride 21st June to Roker's Park

I had great pleasure in leading the B group with the help of sub leaders Tim Court and Tim Gibbons on a day when the weather was just about perfect.

Group 1, Tim Gibbons Sub Leader

All the indications were looking good as we gathered for 11’s at Weybridge day centre. Blue skies and dry conditions prevailed as seven of us set out towards Brooklands following the Venus trail to the Wey Navigation towpath. A variety of twists and turns via Sutton Green and Jacobs Well took us to our most westerly point through Wood Street and onto Roker’s Cafe.

Tables had been reserved and we enjoyed an alfresco lunch in green and pleasant surroundings.

Duly refreshed we left for our afternoon ride that included a very scenic section of the Basingstoke Canal to West Byfleet. On via New Haw, Addlestone and Weybridge we then explored the little known ‘Engine River’ which once provided a commercial route between the Thames and Weybridge.

Unfortunately, the cafe at Walton bridge was just closing as we arrived so we decided to disperse and make our own way home.

Thanks to everyone involved in making today’s ride a success, always a pleasure to lead a compliant and appreciative group of cyclists. Congratulations to Ray for devising a varied and interesting route that included a number of previously unexplored sections. An ideal way to mark the summer solstice.

Tim G

Group 2, Ray Youlden, Leader

Sabina, Alyson, Bernard, Tony, Dave (fixie) and I left Weybridge at 10.50 and started our journey to Roker’s Park Café.  We took an unusual route by leaving the car park via a back entrance down a cycle path and out onto Heath Road. We then proceeded down through Brooklands following the river Wey, through Byfleet and onto the Wey Navigation.  Here my navigation using my phone failed me, so it was down me to remembering the route from my recce plus several u turns needed when I did not instantly recognise exactly where we were. We then went through Woking Park, Sutton Green, Wood Street and onto Rokers Park Café at Fairlands.

The service provided was exceptional with our pre ordered food arriving shortly after we had paid and more than meeting our requirements.

On leaving the car park, we rode more or less straight to join the Basingstoke canal at Brookwood. The canal was gorgeous, with herons, ducks and swans all adding to the overall scene. At West Byfleet we were meant to leave to canal and ride through Addlestone but decided to carry on along the canal to Woodham Junction, where it joins the Wey Navigation and onto Weybridge. Just after Weybridge our plans for tea at Cowie Sale came undone. We found the café closing early, so decided to go to the River House Barn in Walton for tea and who provided us with refreshments and a chance to sit in the garden and reflect on the ride before going our separate ways home.

Group 3, Tim Court Sub Leader

Though Steph wasn't able to ride with us but Grant put in a surprise appearance and we were pleased that he could join us and make up the numbers.

We rode South from the DC alongside the Heath Road and at Weybridge Station headed down the scenic route, crossed the River Wey and meandered along the cyclists' routes around the old Brooklands airfield. After Byfleet we arrived at Murray's Bridge and followed the woodland path by the Wey Navigation to Dodd's Bridge, stopping at both for some photos, then the Dodd's Lane path through to West Byfleet.

Murray’s Bridge

Ann, Pam, and John negotiating Dodd’s Bridge

The 3rd Groups at Dodd’s Bridge

We skirted around the Pyrford residential area to cross the Common, thence to Woking and its park for a quick pit stop. At Elm Bridge we deviated a little from Ray's prescribed route for a tranquil parade alongside the Hoe and its ponds, Willow and Chestnut. Back on track we made our way to Jacobs Well and eventually to Wood Street before turning North to join the Aldershot Road and a mercifully short leg to reach Holly Road and Rokers Farmhouse Café.

We enjoy going to Rokers and sat outside to take in the views across the former golf course. The service was efficient and friendly and as usual we were made to feel very welcome. A serious lethargy threatened to prevent us from standing up after lunch to continue the ride but with a burst of collective willpower we made it off the premises and launched ourselves in the direction of Worplesdon and Fox Corner.

After some busy roads we were relieved to reach the Basingstoke Canal to ride along the Saturn Trail. Approaching Woking I failed to notice Ray's planned detour from the Canal at Arthur's Bridge to go along the Neptune route so we sailed along as if we knew where we going and soon Ray's intended route converged with where we were heading anyway, in time to negotiate the recently constructed bridge across the canal, to continue the route under the Chobham Road and along the southern bank.

Misfortune struck further on when Christina discovered a rear wheel puncture which we cured with a tube replacement. A small shard of flint appeared to be the cause. But as we drew closer to West Byfleet Maggie found that she too had punctured. Sadly, for want of the correct spanner, we couldn't get her wheel off which left Maggie and Paul walking to the station for trains home. They arrived at Wimbledon to find that trains to Sutton weren't running due to a signal failure. Not a happy way to end their day.

While we were dealing with punctures Ken and Grant, with quite some way to go, decided to leave us at West Byfleet. Christina, Anne, and I pedalled on to Walton, arriving much too late for the ice creams we had craved. But the loos were still open, and we were soon heading for our homes.

Ray had devised a clever route with plenty of riding away from the main roads including some little routes we didn't know about. Thanks to Maggie for back marking and maintaining discipline in the peloton. Thanks to the team for appreciating the ride and remaining chirpy all day.

Tim

Invitation to a B Group ride on 28th June

A Group ride to Holyport.

My first ride as group leader - a fair few gremlins did their best to make it a challenging one.
Another beautiful day. 18 signed up for the ride to Ascot ( which following our recce we realised wasn’t a good idea on the first day of Royal Ascot ).
With a new route sorted that circumnavigated Ascot. We set off in 3 groups. With 2 new riders - Paul and Justine, welcome.
Our pub stop at The White Hart, Money Row Green, provided a very efficient and good lunch along with pleasant, welcoming staff.

image.png

I led the first group  - Andy H, Neil W, Steve D and Janice. We had a good paced ride out with very little traffic until Windsor Road. After that our pace picked up again. Arriving at lunch - the staff had our names and food choices listed, which they served quickly.
Post lunch, we set off at a brisk pace to arrive at The Ferry, Shepperton for tea and cake.

Thank you very much to my sub leaders - Ged and Clive who coped admirably with my many wrong terms on the recce and the altered route around Ascot which hadn’t been recce’d.
Thank you to my group - enjoyable company, as always.

Ged’s report

The many revisions and updates to the route made by Fiona paid off handsomely - it was an ideal longest-day ride in gorgeous sunshine. We missed a turn at the prominent Holy Trinity Church,Sunningdale, but resisted the temptation for coffee and cakes in the Church Hall. (Notable Victorian Gothic Revival architects, George Street and John Scott - son of George Gilbert Scott, were responsible for the design). The White Hart made us very welcome, and we reached the Ferry Cafe just the first - and fast group, were leaving. Thanks to Neil C, ably assisted by Dave V. for backmarking , and to Richard, Dave and Jennie, for making-up the sextet. Well done Fiona for a very well executed first assignment!

Clive’s report

My group was the last of the three A Groups to leave the Weybridge Community Centre and was comprised of: Sue Chasty, Dave Ellis, Simon Lambourn, Peter Suchy and two riders that were new to the As, Justine H and Paul Guiste.

From Weybridge we headed off towards Addlestone and thento Ottershaw before we were cycling through the shady lanes and countryside around Chobham Common. We were able to avoid the worst of the Ascot Races traffic by skirting round it through Sunningdale and Cranbourne, although there were quite a few helicopters buzzing around which made it feel like we were in the Tour de France.

After cycling through some beautiful open countryside under the mid-summer Sun, we arrived at our lunch stop; the White Heart in Holyport. The other two groups were already there, but we managed to find a table in the garden, under the shade of a tree, where we enjoyed our lunch which was efficiently served up.

The afternoon ride to tea was a bit shorter than the morning and took us through Bray where this picture was taken on the bridge over the Thames near Bray Marina.

[Simon, Peter, Dave, Justine, Sue, Paul]

By the time we arrived at Nauticalia for tea the first group led by Fiona had already gone (well they did average 16mphapparently) but the second group led by Ged were still there and we joined them for well earned tea and cake before dispersing home.

Thanks to Fiona for organising a really fun, fast route and also for stepping up to join the ranks of ride leaders. Thanks to Simon for back marking and welcome to Justine and Paul; hope you will be able to join us for a ride again soon.

A group ride 28 June

I’m posting details early as I’ll be off to Dieppe in the morning, returning Monday evening.

The ride from Leatherhead will take account of the fact there may be tired legs from Dieppe (it almost counts as a flat ride) and that I won’t be around to arrange pre-orders etc.

We’ll be cycling 28 miles to Horley without even a climb out of Leatherhead, to take lunch in the Wetherspoons there. After lunch we have 18 miles back to the usual selection of cafes in Leatherhead.

Please email me at janice.dawes@gmail.com if you’d like to join me. I’ll send out details of groups the day before.

Strava Security Scare

Wayfarers are likely to be aware of potential bike thefts from your home by undesirables following your Strava feeds. This latest American research takes this concern to a new level - by revealing how personal data, including home address, could be obtained by analysing aggregate data on Strava heatmaps. IT nerds may be interested in this rather academic study, but I doubt there's many British crooks getting their heads round it! For Strava users in our typical SW London locale, it's probably sufficient to disguise your start / finish points by upping your Privacy Controls, in My Profile, by hiding your address. (Do this by selecting a radius - available in eighth-of-a-mile increments, around your house, where your start / finish is hidden). By far the best security however is strong locks and fixed anchor points to secure your precious machines!

Dieppe Raid – Travel to Newhaven

I intend cycling to Newhaven on Friday 23rd. If you would like to join me, the time-honoured route is here:

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/112203056

The gpx starts in Dorking, but I suggest we meet in Tanhouse Farm, as in previous years. The ferry departs at 17.00 and we must be there by 15.30. So I suggest departing Tanhouse at 10.30.

The Cock Inn at Wivelsfield is our traditional lunch spot, menu here. I have made a provisional booking, but they have asked for notice by pre-booking food. So please look at the menu and let me know your choice by email to d.vine207@btinternet.com by Monday 19th pm.

Please let me know if you are coming and I look forward to seeing you at Tanhouse on Friday.
