The Dieppe Raid (tour of the 3 valleys)
I joined the Wayfarers around 7 years ago and was introduced to the Dieppe raid, it was then that Pete Mitchell led the group on the actual 100k route and we had around 25 in the group. What a fantastic event and the French, cyclist club Dieppe, so welcoming. The Wayfarers were awarded the tropthy for the most cyclists from one club.
Since then I have been back every year. Cycling France is such a contrast from the UK. Yes there are hills but also wonderful little villages with lovely little cafes to savour a coffee. Cycling in France seems, to me anyway, to be more accepted as the norm and No potholes! If you have not yet savored the delights of the event then please do give it a go, you won’t be disapointed!

The Dieppe Raid: 28-30 June
Each year many Wayfarers join other cyclists to attend the annual 'Dieppe Raid', an excursion to Dieppe in France with an organised ride on the Sunday. If you haven't been before, I highly recommend you ask around and find out about it. You can find more info on my 2012 blog entry here.
If you do plan to attend, then it's advisable to book soon as I understand there are already 120 entrants, and only 40 places left at the after-ride meal. More details here.

Dieppe Raid 2012

Ray missed out for the second year on least
young rider in the 100km Randonee. A protest has been made to Caroline.
Eric won the least young rider overall.
Coastal scene near Dieppe from the Saturday 60km Randonee. The weather was fine but Sunday was diabolical until the evening sunset.

The Dieppe Raiders

Dieppe Raid - The Wayfarers 90km
Sunday dawned a bit chilly but dry, as the 25+ raiders from the "Sou'Westers" congregated at the event HQ at 08:00. We moved off as a group, soon losing Bob and Lesley, and Mike Morley. Toni D'Italia chased after a very rapid tandem crewed by Mark and Maggie and was never seen again!!! (Until the return to the HQ).
A pleasant, steady, flattish ride to Bellencombe found 12 of us having coffee outside the local bar before moving steadily up the climb through Ardouval - a brief look at the garden of the Gite stayed at in the past - and over the ridge and down a long, pleasant descent through green fields, cows and poppies to lunch at the Avenue Verte to regroup with Graham and Gill, and Mike M.
Good food, fruit, drinks, etc provided and a leisurely rest before climbing over into the next valley and the run-in to Dieppe seafront for a long rest in the hot sun watching the energetic competitors in the Dieppe triathlon, whilst we consumed Italian ice cream. Judging our departure to get to the finish back at the HQ by 16:30 and the prize presentation with more food and drinks, etc.
Our reward for the day, trophies awarded to Sou'Westers as the biggest group; least young rider in the 60km - Eric Ashford; least young rider in the 90km - Raymond Dare; least young lady in the 90km - Pam Jones; and to top it all Rob and Ruth won a new mountain bike in the tombola, following Maureen's success last year, also winning a mountainbike in the tombola.
A moving tribute was given to the memory of Neville Chanin, including a photo display and minute's silence.
The evening meal at the Windsor Hotel was the usual noisy occasion, running late into the night, and also included a toast to the memory of Neville from CCP of the CTC.

Dieppe Raid
Anti-clockwise this year - Maggs and I did the 90k route on our tandem, and found it a bit easier and much better signposted than last year. A fast run to St Aubin-le-Cauf with Toni D'Italia gave us plenty of time for lunch on the quay at Dieppe. Then back to London for us - no prize-giving or celebration dinner. 51.54 miles, rolling average 12.7 mph, 2450 calories and 92 watts.
Thanks to the Club des Cyclotouristes Dieppois and Caroline Street for organising an excellent weekend - and I'm sure there will be plenty more tales to tell when the rest of the Wayfarers get home.

Caroline Street
Caroline Street - Dieppe Raid OrganiserSponsorship Plea ================ I am currently participating in a Marathon Challenge - 7 marathons in 7 months. They are all off-road and consequently very tough. So far I have completed 3 of the 7 events. The next one is on 27th February in South Devon. I hope that you might be willing to spare a few coppers to support me in this challenge. I am raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign and The Rainbow Centre (a local charity on the South Coast that helps families coping with cerebral palsy). Dieppe 100km Randonnée 14 June
Here are the route and telemetry for yesterday's 100 km ride at Dieppe - click on the images to see them full size.
Early rain soon cleared giving good conditions for the day. Telemetry is from the tandem - many will have been quicker, but not all ...
The eagle eyed will spot that we covered almost 130 km. This was due to route-finding errors. For us, at least, the popular belief that the route was well signposted was not well founded - on a future occasion we would work it out carefully ourselves.
All in all a very enjoyable event well organised by our hosts the Club des Cyclotouristes Dieppois.
