Some sad news from Colin Garrod

We learnt from Colin at the weekend that his greatly loved wife Jane died suddenly on Friday. She was on her bike riding to the local food bank in Epsom, where she has been a regular volunteer, suffered a cardiac arrest and died on the roadside. Earlier in the week she had felt unwell, suspected an issue with her heart and visited her doctor the next day. With nothing of concern diagnosed she felt able to carry on with her busy life.

Colin and Jane’s son Ollie, daughter Katie and her husband have been with Colin since Friday. One great comfort to the family has been that three months ago Katie presented Colin and Jane with their first grandchild, a little girl.

Our heartfelt condolences to Colin and family at this very sad time for them.

Cliff Whitfield has died

It is with great sadness that I am passing on news from Maureen that Cliff passed away peacefully in St Helier Hospital yesterday morning, 12th March.

Maureen and Cliff's daughters are planning his funeral and will advise us about the date and venues for the funeral and wake and will want to know how many of us they should expect.

Our heartfelt condolences to Maureen and their family. Quite a number of us have very happy memories of riding with Cliff on club rides as well as numerous tours abroad.

Mike Morley has died

We received the very sad news yesterday evening that Mike Morley has passed away. We have known that Mike was in Epsom hospital for all but a few of the days since Boxing Day and that on top of numerous other medical complications he had tested positive for Covid recently.

We will remember Mike for his company on club rides and many other things but above all for his colossal energy and enthusiasm for cycling and for his contributions to the life of the club, notably for running the Hilly 50Km event in recent years and for stepping in as editor of the Sou'Wester when duty called.

Our thoughts are with Barbara and their family at this sad time.

Ian Appleton - Update

Hello all. Thank you Pam for informing us of Ian's situation. I took it upon myself to buy a get well card this morning on the way to Henfold and the "A" & "B" grouped signed with best wishes. Striking while the iron is hot I then rode all the way to the hospital and Ian immediately recognised me which was reassuring and it did not seem to have an adverse effect like he died of shock!
I was able to help him organise himself to get a shave and find his toothbrush etc. He was sitting in a chair and seemed quite alert and almost normal. While I was there Maureen rang his mobile and had a talk to him. Ian explained that he now had the Flue and I was asked to wear a face mask by the nurse.
At Henfold Ann Bath signed the card and said that she (+ Steve) planned to visit him on Friday.
I asked Ian if it was OK to do a Blog update and he was quite happy for that.
Ian is located in a side room as you enter the ward on the RHS with en-suit facility & the details are exactly as Pam described in her blog yesterday evening.
Good exercise for me 45 miles round trip.

Ray Dare - van driver sentencing and judge's comments

Here is the text, as I understand the link doesn't work for some.

Almost a year ago, 91 year old Ray Dare of the Kingston Phoenix Road Club was killed as he approached the finishing line of the Group’s 10 mile event. On 15 June, the defendant was found guilty and sentenced to 24 weeks imprisonment suspended for two years, ordered to do 200 hours of Community Service, and to undergo Restorative justice (when he speaks to the victim’s family under supervision of the police liaison officer if they wish to speak to him). He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months
The judge asked to be assured that Ray Dare’s family understood the difference between this offence and the more serious offence of causing death by dangerous driving and noted that Ray Dare’s family had written to the court saying they did not wish “two families” lives to be wrecked by the incident. The Judge praised Ray Dare’s family for taking such an attitude and said they were obviously an exceptional and very decent family although he would decide the sentence himself based on all the circumstances.
The Judge took account of the Defendant’s early plea of guilty, his genuine remorse and the fact that he was unlikely to commit any similar offence again. He had been a professional driver for many years and knew the area. The Judge stated that as a local judge with a family of cyclists, he was personally aware that the A41 was regularly used for such cycling events and they were invariably well signed and marshalled and that on the evidence that was the case on the day of the event in July 2017. Other witnesses had seen signs and marshals and the Judge said that he was “astonished” that the Defendant, when interviewed in August, said he had not seen any signs or marshals despite having driven both ways on the dual carriageway. The Defendant was seen by other drivers to pass at least one other rider just before the collision and he claimed he had seen Ray Dare ahead of him when he was close to the “rumble strip” but had failed to pull out. Other witnesses spoke of Ray Dare riding well and steadily. The point of impact was calculated by an expert as occurring approximately two metres from the edge of the carriageway. The van driven by the Defendant had struck the rider almost in the centre of the vehicle so the Defendant had not moved out to allow room to pass the cyclist. The bicycle had been trapped under the front of the vehicle which pulled off and stopped in a layby, Ray Dare was thrown up onto the windscreen and over the vehicle. Despite immediate assistance he died at the scene.

Further update on Robin

Having read the post by Tim about the kind thought of Pam to call him, I thought that I should also visit Robin. I was late arriving at Cobham, not surprising as I had only left home at 10.15am. I took a leisurely mug of tea and biscuits and then set off on my own via Esher, Richmond Park, thinking of Frank as I rode through past all the deer and wondering when will we get the memorial park bench planned for Frank in the Park? Exiting at Roehampton Gate I found it a long drag to Putney Bridge and the what seemed to be miles down Fullham Rd to the hospital. By this time it was raining hard and I wondered was I mad and hoped that Robin would be awake. He is located in Ward 7 North and when I got there was surprised to see me. His brother and sister in law from Worthing were there and had traveled up by train that morning. I said that I was sorry to interrupt a family gathering but they were very kind and asked me to stay. Robin is quite poorly but asked me to convey thanks to all those that had sent him cards and best wishes. I told him that I had seen Lynda, Liz, Pam and Stephanie at Cobham and that they send their best regards. His sister in law said that she had no idea he had so many girl friends!
After half an hour around 2pm and orderly came to take Robin for a further procedure and it would take around 2 hours so I decided to say bye-bye and make my way home leaving Robin with his family. Robin did say that he doubts that he will be cycling again and I did say try and be positive. It seems that he has stomach cancer.
As I left the ward and went to the lift from the 7th floor a very charming slim lady asked me if I had visited Robin seeing that I was a cyclist with a feather in my hat!? Her name was Valerie Burns and I asked how she knew Robin? She said that she was the resident hospital Chaplain and had been so for 7 years. She is a fully qualified medical Dr. but was drawn to her current roll some years ago to help those that needed support and help. Robin had expressed a view to attend a church service over Easter and she arranged for Robin to do that in a wheel chair. It so happened that she is a cyclist herself, married with 4 children and she looked very fit.
So the moral of the story is you never know who you might meet when you visit a hospital and I must say that I am glad I made the effort.
It was not appropriate to take a photo of Robin but I have to say that there were some amazing sculptures at the entrance as I depict below. When I came out of the hospital it was raining hard and I did not fancy a long ride home into a strong headwind, so I headed West to Leicester Sq., a pint and F&C in Spoon's and then train home via the real Charing Cross to Tadworth. I have recently acquired an Oyster card which I have combined with my senior citizen travel card and the fare was £3.65, excellent value. Total mileage today 35 miles.

Peter in hospital

Peter and Helen in St Georges

I saw Peter today. He's coping well with being in hospital and at this stage doesn't know how long he will be in there. There is more than one fracture in his pelvis and hip area but he has been advised by doctors that they are not currently planning any surgery. He has also been advised that exercise will help but for now it is all he can do to get on his feet and, with the aid of a walking frame, take a few steps. This is a shame because there is a gym just a couple of doors along from the room he is in. He is finding the hospital food to be pretty decent.

He is in the Gunning Ward on the 5th floor of the St James Wing at St Georges, Tooting. Visiting hours are between 3 and 8pm.

Friends will be visiting him over the weekend but Helen has given him a small pile of books to read in quieter moments.

Peter Carpenter

Further to Pam's note in her report for B Group regarding Peter's accident here is a more long winded account.

After leaving the A320 we turned into Mixnams Lane to ride around Laleham Reach which borders Penton Hook. Shortly after 15:30, having left the Laleham Reach road and ridden nearly a quarter of the way down the Ferry Lane path Peter ran across a tree root which was protruding diagonally across part of the path, causing him to fall heavily.

Peter stood up with some effort and almost immediately suspected that he may have fractured his pelvis. I phoned Pam who was waiting to regroup at the Chertsey Abbey end of the path. Gill was heading back towards us to see what was happening and in the meantime Nick and Ray went on to explain the bad news.

We decided to back track to where the road ends, near the golf club where unfortunately there was no sign of life. Peter accomplished this slowly, leaning on his bike for support. A van emerged from a nearby property, the driver stopped and after a brief conversation understood our situation very rapidly, quickly establishing that Peter needed to get to hospital. The driver and his wife, with extreme generosity, helped get Peter into the passenger seat and his bike in the back and with some rearrangement of a grand-daughter and a dog, drove off to St Peters Hospital in Chertsey. Hugely kind people.

I rode over to St Peters and found Peter's bike locked up in the rack next to A&E, and Peter himself in reception. Not too long after he was whisked across the road in his wheelchair for an X-Ray then whisked into another clinic for an examination. He emerged and confirmed the diagnosis of a fractured pelvis. While he was having another examination I spoke to Pam and, after considering various options for doing something with Peter's bike, she contacted her good neighbour who was intending to come up to the hospital to collect his wife after her shift. So, in yet another act of great kindness, he turned up in his Volvo Estate and put  Peter's bike in the back and drove off.

Back inside I caught up wth Peter again, flat on his back, somewhat immobile, and looking at the ceiling, and it was quite clear that he would be in hospital overnight. I said goodbye and left him there and caught trains home from Chertsey, during which I spoke to Peter's sister and to his good friend in Folkestone. 

This morning I picked up a text message from him which he had sent at 02:40 to say that he had been relocated to St George's Hospital in Tooting. Later he let me know by text that he had actually managed to get some sleep, that his good neighbours were going to feed his rabbits while he was in hospital, and that he expected to be in hospital for several days.

Peter said that although they were moving him about he was in Gunning Ward for now and when I asked he advised that visiting hours are from 3 pm to 8pm. So I hope to get to see him tomorrow afternoon.

Frank's funeral arrangements - update Sunday 17 July

Please read if you wish to attend Frank's funeral.

The Funeral is going to be held at 11.15am on Monday 25th July at Breakspear Crematorium, Breakspear Road, Ruislip, Middlesex, HA4 7SJ.  The cortège will be traveling to the crematorium from Frank’s home in Greenford, Middx. The family and club would like Frank’s fellow cycling friends to ride with them (about 10 miles at 15 mph). This requires police agreement and escort, which has already been arranged.

Due to the number of cycling clubs and other friends that knew Frank, we are working together with his family to plan Frank’s funeral ride, and have little time to provide the number of riders to the police, and also numbers attending the service and wake to Frank’s family.

Cycling friends who will not be joining the cycle are, of course, very welcome to attend the service and the wake.

Can we ask you to please circulate this through your club and collate responses, by no later than Wednesday 20th July at 7pm.  This is required for the family to fully plan for this event and must be sent to us by the above date and time.

Please confirm if you and other club members will be attending, the ride, the funeral service (making your own way there) and the wake afterwards by clicking on the following link. Please only use this link if you have not notified your club contact.

Frank Cubis knocked off his bike

Frank was knocked off his bike around 10am yesterday in West London. The air ambulance was called to take him to hospital where he is now in an induced coma after a 6hr operation to reduce pressure on his brain. Additionally he has several broken ribs.

Last word is that he is stable, but in a very serious condition.

More to follow when there is any news.

One Final Finale for Bill

Seen here are many of the Wayfarers paying a final tribute to Bill Mathews. Fuzz is sitting on Rita's knee a former member of the Family section, later the Downland section (now disbanded) along with the Squirrel's (Honorary CTC members thanks to their services to CTC with vintage bikes), David A & Dawn, Lynda, Angie, Ray Dare, Mark Roy, Ed & Terry who did much to help Pat in recent days and many others!

Bill Mathews Farewell 27 Jan 2014

Pat & Bill's family said farewell to Bill yesterday at the Putney Vale Crematorium accompanied by many of the Wayfarers that new him. While a sad occasion the officiator Andy Climie very aptly created a celebration of Bill's undoubted full & rewarding life, I found the service very uplifting with appropriate music chosen by Pat as some of Bill's favorites. Pat also composed an appropriate poem which was read out & I will try and launch some more pictures later once I have sorted out my Picasa upload problems (if ever).
Those attending were treated to a very nice spread at the Admiral Beatty afterwards for which we thank Pat & her family. As was said while Bill's body has been committed to ashes his memory and achievements will live on and I am sure sustain his family.

Pat Matthews spoke to Terry today to say Bill’s funeral will be at Putney Vale Crematorium on Monday January 27 at 13.40, and afterwards at The Earl Beatty at 365 West Barnes Lane, Motspur Park, near the level crossing. If driving, there is a (refundable) parking charge at the pub. Both venues are on TfL Local Cycling Guides 9 and 10.

Pat isn’t able to receive email messages at the moment, but she can be contacted at her home number and address.
