March the 19^th is the London Ride and a 9.00am start from North Cheam.
11's will be at the Madeira cafe Vauxhall just opposite the MI5 building
Lunch will be at the Gatehouse pub (Wetherspoons) Highgate.
Afternoon tea will be at the La Gondola Al Parco cafe in Battersea park.

A Right Royal Ride!

A Ride 19 Feb. Weybridge start.

Jeff was scheduled to lead this ride, but he manfully stood in for my ride when I had man flu, so I will be leading.I have planned a westerly route that takes us South of the Thames floods, but North of the floods around Cobham, Wisley etc. Hopefully, snorkels will not be needed.

I guess most will be heading to Weybridge by some combination of Richmond and Bushy Parks or past Hampton Court. From there, a Royal theme continues with a route out through (Royal) Ascot to lunch at the Duke of Edinburgh and back via Windsor Great Park to tea at the Riverhouse Barn @Walton

17  rolling miles to lunch and 15 gentle miles to tea.

This ride’s quiz question: On the way into Weybridge, the road passes through a park/sports grounds. What is the Royal connection linking those sports grounds and a regular waterside Weyfarers’ ride?

A Group Wednesday 27 November

This weeks ride will be one of the flattest on record. Note, Mr Tollerman, starting and finishing at the same elevation does not qualify as "pancake flat". This one is a flat 19 miles to lunch with a very minor tester on the 10 miles to tea.

One of the easier A rides of the year with a guaranteed hone run in the light. (With a very modest element of good condition canal tow path)

Teddington start, Fox @ Hanwell for lunch via a route of major Scientific, Military, Historical, Social, Engineering and Medical significance. There might even be a lunchtime quiz with a free pint on offer to anyone recognising those items... Now there is a tempter....

I'm happy to load into my Garmin and "Lead As I Follow", as it were - wrong turnings and confusion guaranteed - if the group will bear with me...

Would be good if other Garmined folk also load the route and we can have a Leaders' Committee Meeting at any points of confusion.

On the other hand, if someone has a better idea....

I shall be leading a ride from Dorking to Charlwood on Wednesday with a lunch at the Half Moon Pub. I have been watching the weather forecast  and it seems that we are likely to have showers during the day.

A ride 31st July

For those with access to blogs, this is about the 'A' group ride I am taking on 31st July from Dorking. The route will be via Blagdon Hill To Polesden Lacey then off road climbing to Ranmore Common then descending down to East Horsley along the A246 to West Horsley and via Lanes to the Black Swan for lunch at Ockham. Tea at Ashstead (Bike Beans) going via Downside, Fetcham, Leatherhead, and Lower Ashstead.
Those wishing not to do rough stuff to Ranmore Common should be able to rejoin by road.

A Group ride 24 July - taster

I'll be leading, and survivors from my last ride will be pleased to know that this one will be all on tarmac! (apart from a quarter mile stretch to avoid a busy dual carriageway.

Lunch is 24 miles and the weather will be hot hot, so I'd like a prompt start so that we can keep the pace down. Plus there is a scenic patch mid ride that demands a stop!

A Group Ride 12 June - pre-ride

I will be leading this ride from Weybridge. Destination is Tongham at a modest pace but with an off road section of around 6 miles on gravel track of a similar standard to the Thames or Canal tow paths (ie considerably better than Tanhurst Lane along which we ventured last week, and that is euphemistically called a road! ).

I've reccied twice on my Yukon with 25mm conti 4 seasons with no problems, but you might want to leave the fancy carbon and race ready tires at home!

Total ride: 40 miles to Tea at Ockham bites.

(In the event of wet weather I have an on road alternative to Tongham)

A Group ride from Cobham 5 June

Tomorrow's A Group ride will be 21 miles  miles, heading due south to Warnham - destination The Greets Inn - so a prompt start soon after 11am is advised. A late start might require a somewhat sporting avs. The choice is yours!

A group ride on Wednesday the 15th May

The A group ride on the 15^th May from New Haw day centre will be a little bit longer than of late. 27 miles to lunch at Hurley (on Thames) and 23 miles to tea at Squires GC Upper Haliford.

The weather sages tell us that the mercury will have reached the heady heights of 4C by Wednesday. An undulating ride over the foothills to Brook, near Witley, should keep us warm. Irene tells me those going direct to Kingston Wetherspoon's should arrive for a 1pm meal - the rest will leave Leatherhead very soon after 11am.

JDW is in Clarence (one-way) Street, opposite Wilkinson's and a cinema. There are plenty of railings to which bikes can be locked.

A ride post AGM 9th Oct

I have checked possible ride after AGM and propose to take route to Westcott approx 16 mls going via White Down.There are two eating venues there -The Prince of Wales pub and a new Deli cafe almost opposite the P of W.Both do meals after 2.00 pm. 3's can be at Annie's Leatherhead returning via Dorking.

Hope this would suit all 'A' riders assuming the AGM concludes by say 12:15

The Shoreham Century - Trip Notes

It's almost midsummer, so here's the Shoreham Century, a Monument of the Wayfarers' calendar, neatly sandwiched between the end of the Dauphiné and the beginning of the Tour de France.  Old hands will know the drill; these notes are for newcomers.


The Shoreham Century is unusual, perhaps unique, amongst centuries in that it's not necessarily a hundred miles.  The course is 92 miles from the start at North Cheam to the finish at Leatherhead.  To get your century you'll need to add on your home-to-ride mileage.  This is not necessarily a disadvantage, as it enables enthusiasts like Frank to do a century of 121 miles (his longest ride this century, so he said, but of course there's still quite a bit to go ...).


But that's not all - the flexibility extends in the other direction.  If you'd like to do the ride but don't fancy the distance then a train to Dorking and a train home from Horsham just about halves it, and you still get your lunch at the seaside. Or mix and match, as you choose - the railway is close to the route all the way from Horsham.

No-one is dropped on the way out, but the group tends to divide on the way back - a longer lunch or a longer tea suits some better.  It's a longish ride but not a hard one - if you can cover twelve miles in an hour without stopping then you'll be fine.

Rodboro Building

In 1901 Dennis Bros. Ltd moved into a factory designed for the production of their motor vehicles on the corner of Onslow Street and Bridge Street, in Guildford. This building was later known as Rodboro Buildings, after the Rodboro Boot and Shoe Company who bought the building from Dennis in 1917. The brothers launched their first motor car in 1902, buses in 1903, followed by vans and lorries, and fire engines, the most famous of Dennis Vehicles, from 1908.

The Redhill Romp - Wednesday

Here is the route map of Wednesday's A Group Ride. It's about thirty miles elevenses to tea. Lunch will be served at the Old Bell Oxted and tea will be taken at Fanny's. There are some hills, both up and down, and Chalk Pit Lane, the popular test hill, has been included for your delight. It can easily be circumvented by those who don't fancy it.

I rode the route today and things aren't too bad. The lanes are pretty agricultural, with plenty of gravel and more pot-holes than before the snow, but nothing that should cause us any difficulty. What may be a problem, however, is the weather, as Wednesday's forecast currently shows the possibility of sleet or snow. We'll see.

If the weather really is a problem I shall post a cancellation notice here before 08:00 Wednesday morning. But I hope that there's no need, and look forward to seeing you all at Redhill.
