I know from experience of putting up questions on the DA Blog like "Where is this!" that hardly anyone reads the DA blog and I notice that hardly anyone puts comments to any Blog be it MWW etc and that is one reason why I have resigned as publicity secretary. It was a very interesting DA AGM.

A-Group "Here be Dragons ride" May 16 2012

Some time ago Vic muttered on here that rides were sometimes a bit samey and rarely ventured into the North West quadrant of the putative Wayfarers' territory. So, having discovered a fantastic Pub at Hedgerley I thought  I would kill two birds with one stone.....

Thus, with the sun shining encouragement on our endeavours, our gallant band of 16 mounted our trusty steeds and ventured forth  toward that part of the Wayfarer map beyond the M4 & simply marked "Here be Dragons"!

First to Chertsey, and the river; thence to Staines. Onward rode our gallant crew! Wraysbury, Datchet, past the jousting fields of Eton onward ever faster to the Slough of Despond beyond the M4 - where the Dragons struck!

Tony was the first to fall - victim of an errant cone, Jeff and Peter too were attacked! But our trusty brothers are made of stern stuff. Up they got, tended, their wounded steeds and prepared for further trials. Jeff and Peter volunteered to venture on to face the unknown challenges ahead while Mike of Morley, generous and gallant soul, volunteered to accompany our wounded Italian Troubadour to the safer territories of the Homelands.

Onward we rode through the Poges of Stoke and into to Enchanted Forest, not far from the wondrous Beeches of Burnham. Then on, down the precipitous slopes of Hedgerley Hill  and safe to our destination - the famous White Horse of Hedgerley, a marvellous hostelry famous for serving serving warriors of our ilk ale and sustenance since the 1920's and oft voted the best ale house of the region by those stout and bearded Defenders of the Faith - CAMRA! Therein we found our trusty colleague Staring Bob - magically there before us!

Fed and watered, we ventured forth. North to the foothills of the Mountains Of Chiltern. South we turned to Fulmer, passing close to the Magical Kingdom of Hogwarts in the Pine Wood, eventually to rejoin our outward path of the morn, braving once again the deadly cones of Slough, retracing our tracks to Shepperton and thence on the the Walled Garden to be waited on by the wenches of Sunbury.

With the forecast reporting dismal weather almost non stop for the last month it was quite a surprise to find that it was merely scotch mist when with some trepidation I arrived at the Leatherhead Day Centre to lead the ride. As reported by Mike M - he advised me of the road work beyond Box Hill. This was a disapointment for me as in my recce on Monday there were no problems and finding the Zig Zag to the top of the hill was a perfect surface with humps removed but with the surface thereon to Pebblecombe my planned route untouched.

With a revised route in mind we (approx 16 of us) left Leatherhead in the direction of Dorking only to be split into two parties when I found I was leading too fast on arriving at the entry to the cycle path to Givons Grove. My intention was to be able to continue on the path beyond Givons Grove without negotiating the dangerous R'about there. Although on waiting on the other side of Young St to reassemble we appeared to have lost some when shortly turning off the cycle path for the climb to Norbury Park. When we stopped to enjoy the view before descending to West Humble we numbered 11 but on arriving at WH, Jeff T was waiting for us he having taken a different route. From WH we crossed the A24 using the tunnel continuing on to the Olympic route revised avoiding 9 circuits of the Zig Zag, our route being via Little Switzerland and eventually on the planned route descending Pebblecombe thereon to Betchworth (fame of the film 4 weddings and a funeral- at the church) and to the Seven Stars pub at Dawes Green.

It was a very quiet lunch - not surprising - either because the weather forecast or the prices had put people off.

We returned still in dryish weather and with a following wind quite fast via Brockham until unfortunately Pete had a tumble in Pixham Lane on mud where more roadwork was in progress. He was quite shaken but am glad to say nothing like as bad as Cavendish in Monday's Giro D'Italia Sprint when he was brought down.

There were 10 of us at Annie's for 3's after which we parted company for our homes hoping that the wet weather forecast would hold off.

We were most sorry to learn that, after some ten years of voluntary service looking after us at the RBL Hall on the first Wednesday of the month,  doctor's orders require both Thelma and Hazel to hand over the reins. I'm sure that we all send them our warmest thanks and best wishes for good health and recovery. It has been suggested that we hold a collection for them. If you agree, please have a £1 coin to hand for the collection plate. (Jeff)

 No rain today, but as Graham says, we did take a big dip at the big dip going up High Barn Road. Nothing that the log fire at the Little Park Hatch could not cope with.

Tuesday morning in Stirling sees Neil Oliver (of Coast fame) pushing his kids to school but is neither the date nor time nor place to plan the following day's Wayfarers ride. So I had to keep it simple hoping the route would avoid any legacies of the recent weather meaning no Hoe or Tanhurst Lanes and their like.

With prior knowledge of onroad hazards, Ray led a time trial through Downside, and across Bookham Common to the station where he and Mike exited left to rest before an evening event.

From the Effingham crossroads we took High Barn Road. At the big dip, construction work (St Teresa's extension?) has created a lake so it was wet feet all round. In contrast both top and bottom of White Down were bone dry. After Holmbury and Cotton Row we slalomed along Lower Breache Road – a contender for Surrey's worst surfaced(?) road. 

The Little Park Hatch provided a worrying statistic - we were 11/12ths of the customers but the usual gargantuan proportions and roasting open fire were most welcoming. Back the way we came at least as far as Ewhurst. Then it was southeast to Walliswood and Okewoodhill and up Weare Street. Mike went AWOL near Capel; apologies, that’s 3 on the trot. Cakes and tea at Denbies rounded off a dull but dry day; just over 60 miles door to door.

A novelty from Graham today - a ride without rain, though there was no shortage of water.  36.56 miles from elevenses at Cobham to tea at Denbies, lunch being taken at Little Park Hatch, Cranleigh. 2,241 feet of ascent and 1,638 calories.

Now that the rain has stopped, can Summer be far away?  *

An outing to Winchester – 'A' ride 18 April

I planned this trip during the March heatwave. Imagine us all cycling through beautiful Hampshire countryside – dappled sunlight playing on our faces as we cycled down bosky lanes; vistas of sun-drenched fields; sunshine glinting off the watercress beds as we cycled between gurgling streams. Well, we could only imagine it yesterday, since the sun was replaced by a lot of rain and a severe weather warning of rain, hail, thunder, and inundated roads. Strangely, Weybridge day centre was much quieter than usual. The North Cheam contingent numbered only Les! As and Bs only mustered about 8 riders each, and a large number of sausage rolls remained uneaten.

Despite this, Rob, Peter Betts, Dave, Ged, John B, Mark and myself set off on our longer-than-usual ride, accompanied for the first few miles by Pete Barnard who later went off to recce another route. The idea was seeded by Vic's recent encouragement to visit different places, further afield; catching the train back so we could avoid crowds(!) of people trying to catch the same train out to 11's. In the event, crowds were not a problem. We went via Foxhills to Chobam, Knaphill and Pirbright, then over Tunnel Hill and Mytchett to Ash, where Greyhound had a special offer on a curry and a drink, and we narrowly missed a heavy downpour.

Emerging to sunshine, we paid a short cultural visit to the Hog's Back brewery, then from Tongham to Runfold and more or less south to Tilford. John's cape was acting as a sail in the strong southerly wind so this was quite a challenge for him. Thence across to Millbridge and Frensham: beautiful countryside on a nice day and not bad in the rain; through the Alice Holt forest and due west to Binsted and Alton, where we had tea and impressive cakes in Poppins cafe with 40 miles on the clock, after which John left us for home. The route to seemed to be blocked by a large hill, but this was overcome by cake-power, then it was plain sailing through Alresford and along a tiny lane between two streams, taking us almost to Winchester. Just as the end was in sight, Mark punctured: it appeared that a large flint (perhaps a neolithic arrow-head?) had got into his tyre.

We arrived around 6pm, wet, tired, thirsty and happy, for another cultural visit to The Eclipse Inn, which dates from about 1540 and was originally used by pilgrims to the nearby shrine of St Swithun, and is haunted by the ghost of Lady Alicia Lisle.

A Group 18th April - Weybridge to Winchester

A Group 18th April

Welcome innovation from Simon today - a point-to point ride with a return by train. 59.15 miles from elevenses at Weybridge to a celebratory beer at the Eclipse, Winchester. Lunch at the Greyhound, Ash and tea at Alton. 4,256 feet of ascent and 2,650 calories, rolling average 12.0 mph.

A very enjoyable ride and a successful day out, despite generally poor weather.

A Group, April 11th

No rain before lunch said the man on the BBC just before I left home and 5 minutes later it was raining in Ashtead. So I togged up accordingly and set off for what became a sunny ride to Redhill. From here the first stretch was the familiar route past the hospital, then to Outwood, Bones Lane and Lingfield. From the racecourse a long climb followed through Dormansland and beyond whence the descent soon brought us to Smithers Lane. We savoured the rural peace and stopped for a photo and industrial history interlude at Furnace Pond. Now only a mile to lunch at the Fountain in Cowden and still dry. Lunch was swiftly provided and soon after two we were on our way. Its a bit of a pull going north out of Cowden straight after lunch but soon we were sweeping down to Edenbridge. On to Haxted and Crowhurst ( with the statutory stop to look at the yew) it remained dry but the clouds were building. A sharp shower just after the railway bridge caused a stop for some to don their jackets and the rain instantly ceased! Towards Tilburstow I unwisely discussed tyre life and the age of my Specialized Armadillo Elites.  So it was that fate was tempted and soon after the summit an ominous thumping from the rear wheel was felt. A splitting wall was swiftly diagnosed and I sent the party on to Fanny's while I nursed the offending object slowly homewards. Three were still in the queue when I reached there so it was a full team for tea and I made it home without further mishap or rain. About 60 miles in total.

An outing to Winchester - April 18th

As a change from our more circular rides, I'm planning a ride to Winchester on Weds April 18th, returning by train; which gives us the chance to sample some different countryside.

The distance is more than usual but I don't plan to make it a race, so we'll stop for tea in Alton before riding to Winchester, arriving around 6.30, where I'm told they have pubs and many other sightseeing opportunities, as well as a station with frequent trains to Woking, Clapham Junction etc, so getting home shouldn't be a problem so long as we don't all travel on the same one.

Total distance is around 56 miles: 20 miles from elevenses at Weybridge to lunch; about 17 to Alton and then just under 20 to Winchester. I hope you will join us! Simon.

CTC AGMs are like busses - they all seem to come at the same time.

I'm sure that you all have the DA AGM indelibly marked in your diaries for 12.30pm on Sunday, 6 November, at Breech Lane Community Centre, Walton on the Hill.

Those who aspire to enter Mastermind with CTC AGMs as their specialist subject, will no doubt have noted with horror the incorrect time of 14.00 hours (no fault of the CTC) recorded on page 78 of the October/November issue of Cycle. The correct details were published in the Sept/Oct issue of the Sou'Wester.

There will be a short Cheam & Morden ride on that day, which will lead to Walton on the Hill for the AGM at 12.30pm, possibly to be followed by a bracing sasparillo at the Chequers.

Everybody will be welcome.

MINUTES OF 30th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 13th OCTOBER 2010

At Hersham Village Hall – 50 members were present, apologies were received from Mike Withers.

Item 1 – Election of Chairman - Pete Barnard stated he was prepared to continue in the post of Chairman, proposed by Les Johnston, seconded by Pete Mitchell. New members were welcomed.

Item 2 – Minutes of AGM 13th October 2010 distributed prior to and at meeting. Acceptance proposed by Pete Mitchell, seconded by Ron Powney.

Item 3 – Matters arising None.

Item 4 – Secretary’s Report – Available at the meeting. Acceptance proposed by Les Johnston, seconded by Pete Mitchell.

Item 5 – Statement of Account and Treasurer’s Report – circulated prior to and at the meeting. Acceptance proposed by Francoise Humphrey, seconded by Ray Harrison.

Item 6 – Annual Subscription 2010/11 (from 1st January 2011) – Colin Quemby reported an increase in running costs of The Sou’Wester. Wayfarers contribution should be increased from £1 to £2, and reduce Wayfarers annual membership from £2 to £1 – proposed by Pete Mitchell, seconded by Ray Dare.

Item 7 – Election of committee – All members stated they were prepared to continue in their posts.

Item 11 – Anniversary Dinner 2nd March – Another enjoyable event at Prezzo Cheam, organised by Lynda Barrow.

Item 12 – Ballot for Arthur Jessop Shield – Awarded to Jeff Tollerman, proposed Pete Mitchell, seconded Irene North. Mark Gladwyn declined to be considered.

Item 13 – Any other relevant business – Jeff Tollerman gave an update on the CTC Charity Fund. The problem of insufficient leaders was raised by Rob Maskell. Charles Barraball remembered a late cycling colleague. Cycle parking was discussed.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Wayfarers, founded in 1980, continue to flourish after 31 years, with good turnouts every Wednesday, usually despite the weather.

Our rides programme continues to attract good support from all three groups, with frequent new members.

The weekly rides follow the format established over the years of all usually meeting at the same ‘elevenses’ and members deciding which ride to join. A back- marker is an essential member. Anyone prepared to lead please see the Rides Secretary.

Our year began with Jeff Tollerman winning the Arthur Jessop award.

The downhill competition was organised by Terry plus helpers at Norwood Hill. Christine was the furthest freewheeling lady while Godfrey was runner-up to Mark. Ed Sharp donated a hand-carved trophy.

Brian Greenwood led us to The Cricketers at Epsom for a pre-Christmas lunch. The meal was fine but the pub under-staffed. A pre-Christmas dinner and anniversary lunch were organised by Lynda at Prezzo, Cheam.

Special events were a two night hostelling trip to Blackboys and Truleigh Hill organised by Terry, a 100 mile ride to Shoreham, a non- competitive Hilly 50, a non-competitive visit to the Catford and Bec Hill climb courses and an enjoyable mystery tour led by Mark, another enjoyable mystery tour (very well supported) led by Frank and our annual meeting with East Sussex DA.

The Mark Roy Shield, awarded annually (with certificate) to the Wayfarer recording greatest mileage improvement over the previous year is won by Mark Gladwyn with an increase of 1942 miles. Congratulations!

We continue self-certification of attendance, whereby members record their attendance on the annual rides programme. By the AGM you should have had time to total your attendance points(one point for each elevenses ridden to and one point for each lunch stop attended).

A word of appreciation for Pete Mitchell, distributor and despatcher of Sou’Westers; thanks, Pete particularly from members no longer able to be part of our rides. This service is available to any member for the cost of postage.
