Well an improvement on last week ( 6 riders vs 5) but the heat, holidays and other commitments kept many away. So unlike earlier in the year when it was necessary to explain to landlords that there were now 20 of us rather than the 15 or so forecast it has been my job to last two weeks to deliver the opposite message.
Well it was a hot one - I checked later and Charlwood was 33-33.7C most of the afternoon. In spite of this the outward run didnt seem exceptionally hot and plenty of shady Surrey lanes helped. We headed south over Whitedown and through Holmbury St Mary and Rudgwick to that old favourite, the Blue Ship at the Haven. Somersbury Road was closed to cars but we were allowed through with a warning to avoid the "deep holes" ( the edges were cut away for repair) and a suggestion that it might be worth a £10 fee.
After a good lunch and much liquid intake we returned via Slinfold, Warnham and Rusper to Tanhouse Farm for tea. An overenthusiastic UPS (?) van turned prematurely into Green Lane forcing Jeff into a bloody encounter with the blackberry bushes in the hedge. The sound effects from our tyres told us that the tar was becoming rather tacky on the road up to Rusper and it certainly felt like 33+ when we got to tea.
Good to see Jeff out with the A's again and thanks to Janice, Simon, Neil and John B for also braving the heat.
