Storm Henk had left its mark. The River Mole had flooded nearby fields as we crossed the bridge at Downside Road. Fallen trees in Crocknorth Road and Abinger Lane had thankfully been cleared. (Undeterred we brazened our way past the 'Road Closed' sign in Froggetts Lane just as the chain-saw gang were at work).
Henk didn't deter us in Whitedown Lane, where a large 'puddle' provided some fun 😀for my group as we each tested the depth, trying to keep our feet dry. (Andy Coxhill obviously had experience with a tried and tested technique!).
The least said the better about the Punchbowl. (Judging by their 'customer service' the business must be hanging by a thread - just like their pub sign which Henk failed to fell!).
The 10.30am group from Cobham. |
Dave's second group. |
Out of 18 starters at Cobham, seven stopped for tea at Destination Bike, Box Hill. Rain clouds threatened, but it seems that the cloudburst was further away before our departure. Thanks to Andy for diligent back marking, to others who were pressed into occasional corner marking (a novel duty!), and to all for coping well with some challenging climbs after a seasonal holiday off the bike. All good practice for those planning to ride the Hilly 50 in a couple of months time. Thanks to Dave Vine for sub-leading and to Janice for back marking the second group on the road.
