A Group 29th May

We had a bit of luck with the weather on Ray's ride today - grey, and a few spots of rain around lunchtime, but generally dry.  Maggie tells me it rained all afternoon at home.  Devil looks after his own, I suppose.

Anyway, 24.96 miles from elevenses at the Vineries to tea at Denbies; lunch at the Little Park Hatch, Cranleigh.  There is some approximation in the telemetry, as I (once again) forgot to press a button at the right time.  But rolling average about 12mph and a top speed of 41.2mph on Coast Hill.

The swallows have arrived at Denbies, so it must be summer.

I only managed 38.1 descending Coast Hill last Sunday (see Tony's C and M article),due to (a) non-aerodynamic riding position and (b)Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. These are noticeably slower - in fact the fastest B young lady frequently freewheels past me, smiling.

If one is interested in avoiding the A25 Westcott - Dorking, brake hard at foot of Coast Hill and turn left into Balchins Lane.Left into Springfield Road, left through new metal gate.Right onto not finally surfaced track (it's not too bad), right at end of track past Milton Court farm, left beyond lake, follow signs to Milton Court Lane leading to a (newly shared) footpath to traffic lights and back on the A25. Sounds complicated but is quite clear on Surrey Cycle Guide no. 5.

Wheels and tyres are key, followed by keeping your elbows in!

Thanks for the route tip,
