What was that about the worst of the rain clearing by 9am?
So after a damp ride to Laleham we listened to the rain hammering on the roof of the garden centre for a while and then eight hardy souls set off. A heavy shower at Wraysbury was short lived and by the time we reached Pinewood it was warm and sunny. The Alderbourne ford was very tame in spite of the overnight rain and by 1pm we were enjoying an early lunch at the Greyhound in Chalfont St Peter.
We left with a menacing cloud to our left and were soon navigating a river in the midst of a torrential thunderstorm. This continued for a couple of miles after which it mostly dried up and we enjoyed quiet, but debris strewn lanes across the Chilterns to Berkhamstead and a flooded approach to Hemel Hempstead. Tea at the Fishery Wharf cafe beside the canal was taken in the sunshine
though soon after leaving we took shelter from the next onslaught ....
Two miles along the canal brought us to Nash Mills and then it was mostly more lanes to Gorhambury Park where the road though the estate provides a traffic free approach to St Albans.
Arrival was rather later than planned with an average speed of 11.5mph reflecting the conditions.
My thanks to Simon for back marking and everyone who braved the conditions for making it an enjoyable day.
