Highly recommended
With the usual Wayfarers’ immaculate timing, today’s ride saw us taking advantage of the last fine day of the mini heatwave we have been having ( the Thursday after being a particularly soggy one). Elstead was our destination, not a venue I for one had visited before on a Wednesday. Folks were looking hot and bothered within the confines of the BL hall at Cobham even before we started, so it was with some relief that eleven of us finally set off along Plough Lane, through Ockham (Haut Boy still boarded up), and into East Clandon, where we followed the A246 into Guildford.
A steep ascent of the Mount followed followed by a mile of flint track along the top of the Hog’s Back, Janice’s mountain bike without doubt being the best choice of steed for both these sections. After that, we dropped down into Compton, and crossed the A3, before passing through Puttenham. Another 3 miles down Suffield Lane took us to the Woolpack, in Elstead, where we consolidated our tans in the garden. Lunch was excellent, with sandwiches being served in individual wicker baskets, washed down by pints of real ale drawn by gravity from wooden casks.
Reluctant limbs finally stirred into action, the way back took us through Norney and Hurtmore, before tea (and ice cream) was taken at Squires Garden Centre at Horsley.
I covered 63 miles in all.
