Easy Riders - 1st July

Ten of us left in two groups along Downside Road, taking a left on Cobham Park Road and then across to Chilbrook Road, turning left into Ockham Lane to Ockham. We followed Ockham Road North and turned left into The Drift, a rough road unkind to cyclists. At the end we turned right onto Forest Road, rode over the bridge and took the third turning on the left called Heathway. About half way round this road there is an easily cycled track which leads to Effingham Junction but beware of horses and riders who frequent this narrow but comfortably cycled track. We crossed Howard Road onto Banks Lane and followed it over Great Bookham Common and on to Commonside into Fetcham. Soon after we stopped in River Lane where, unfortunately, Bernard Brindley lost his footing and fell over. Although there was a fair amount of blood from his knee, Bernard was unfazed and wanted to carry on. We made our way into Leatherhead where benches were available in the High Street and Swan Centre plus we had access to toilets.

We thought it a neat idea that a barber's shop had its chairs outside the premises - perhaps a haircut in the open air a possibility? Ray Wren couldn't hold himself back and thought that he might do a "deal" for the sparse growth on top of his head. He came back to us a little crestfallen as the chap working there said he was only re-laying the floor!

After our packed lunches and drinks were consumed we looked into the sky to see rain clouds forming and so decided to head back nearer our homes by going round Ashtead and across Epsom Common.
