B Group, 6 July 2011

Cobham - Send - Addlestone

The B team had a new and first-time leader this week and I had a great day out with them. We did a bit of off-road – Hogsmill Lane, River Lane and Great Bookham Common. We did a bit of climbing up Green Dene and Coombe Lane, East Horsley with the incentive of the descent to East Clandon down Staple Lane. Some went too quickly to admire the views which because of the overnight rain were exceptionally good with Wembley clearly visible in the middle distance. The reward for everyone’s efforts was lunch at the Jovial Sailor in Send. On one table the conversation moved from tunnels to bats and from bats to rats with one of our number extolling the virtues of rats as pets. This discussion continued during the afternoon. After lunch, and not to everyone’s taste, we used the A3 cycle track to get to Jacob’s Well and Smart's Heath and then through the narrow tunnel (the start of lunchtime’s conversation) under the railway before joining the gentrified part of the Basingstoke Canal through Woking to West Byfleet. As we progressed, the 17 at coffee and lunch gradually diminished en route to 9 at tea, which after going through Row Town, we took at the Wyevale Garden Centre at Addlestone. The rain held off all day and it was reasonably warm if a little blustery making it a very enjoyable day out.

Peter,

Thanks for a very pleasant, circuitous, traffic-free ride.

Terry (he who left at Sheerwater).
