An uncertain weather forecast and a relatively chilly start to the day might have contributed to a low turnout. Despite black clouds never being far away, however, we were let off with just a single sharp shower.
As usual en route to Cobham we went through the Blackhills estate and, possibly for the first time ever, we entered and exited through the electric gates without having to wait (we have been delayed by up to five minutes at each end in the past). Less fortunate was a delivery driver, held up by a rise-and-fall bollard at the halfway point. Ed Sharp applied some muscle but to no avail.
Thanks to Mick Arber for tea/coffee and cakes at Cobham – much appreciated by all.
We were again on familiar territory after elevenses. Roadworks – at least four places limited to a single lane and two sets of traffic lights - were the main feature between Downside and Effingham. There didn’t seem to be much work in progress. From Effingham, we made our way to lunch at The Bell at Fetcham. Prices have gone up but the lunch menu portions were generous, service good and we were all well satisfied.
The journey home took in Leatherhead and Ashtead Common where the paths were in good condition considering the previous day’s rain. Tea stop was at the Old Moat.
Dawn Moriarty and Peter Burge left us at Cobham. Just five of us completed the ride: Sandy Bayliss, Ed Sharp, Peter Tiller, Ray Wren and myself.
