B Group - 21st June

A fairly small group turned up for my ride from Tanhouse Farm. Or as Trump might say, we had the biggest turnout ever seen on a B Group ride. Beautiful!

Liz Neville, Chris Dent and myself headed South from the farm. After Rusper and Warnham we headed East through Rowhook then up to Ellen's Green and Cox Green and through to Baynards where, after admiring the old house, we left the road to take the Cranleigh Line (Downs Link - NCN 223) from Baynards Station up to Cranleigh.

The Three Horeshoes is a very welcoming pub and I'm not sure why we haven't been there before. Of course, having warned the landlord that there could be a dozen or so in our group, I had to grovel a bit, but I will contrive to lead a full group there sometime; Cranleigh is a very well placed destination for B Group if they don't mind doing a few hills.

After lunch we headed for Ewhurst then North up the lovely route through Hurt Wood to Peaslake where Chris and Liz each enjoyed a frozen confection which painted their tongues a bright orange. Hoe Lane brought us up and down and eventually to the Volunteer where we turned up Raikes Lane. The amount of traffic in Hoe Lane was extraordinary with massive congestion caused by the afternoon school run. No doubt we played our part in creating the mayhem but this is presumably a daily occurence. It must be very stressful living out in the sticks.

We crossed the A25 and up the hill but had already decided to risk life and limb on NCN 22 into Dorking rather than risk a heart attack or some other major blowout on White Down. With this warm weather the mud had congealed quite well so apart from a few stones and tree roots and having to skirt around the very large muddy bit near the begining of the track we had an enjoyable ride and arrived at Pilgrim Cycles in plenty of time for refreshments.

Thanks to Chris and Liz for being such good company over a route which was pretty challenging.
17.7 miles to Lunch, 14.3 miles to Tea.
