Many of us who never had a chance to talk to David will possibly remember the quiet cheerful man who used to be the in kitchen at the Royal British Legion in Cobham, making tea and doing all our dishes while Maureen and Wendy-Jane took care of the serious front-of-house business of serving our tea and coffee. David was in fact the Chairman of the Cobham Branch of the RBL.

Further to the sad news of David's death, posted by Ged on this blog, Dave Vine and myself were able to attend David's funeral today. As is frequently the case it was an opportunity to learn much more about his life. We learned that in his youth he was a Queens Scout and amongst the first to receive the Duke of Edinburgh's Award; he was a high academic achiever leading to his becoming a lawyer; a keen yatchsman and hiker along with many other sporting passions. He loved his walking and camping.
Of greater significance to us was his keen involvement in numerous community organisations and local charities, including as a trustee of the Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust, a legal advisor to the Citizens Advice Bureau, and he was engaged with Transition Cobham. As an environmentalist (and vegetarian) with a strong belief in moving towards a more sustainable way of life he had often expressed his goodwill towards us and our activities. We will greatly miss him at the RBL when we resume our visits. Dave and I took the opportunity to catch up with Maureen who many of us have known for several years. She passes on her warmest regards to everyone.
