Cobham - Sutton Green - Walton-on-Thames
The route I planned brought together parts of previous rides and part of a section borrowed from a Brian Greenwood ride around Woking.
Somewhat strange to travel to a pub south of Cobham by going north, but that enabled us to get to Weybridge where at last we started to move in a southerly direction. Wisley, and avoiding Woking center by use of paths and side roads saw us arrive at The Olive Tree in good time.
We had originally arranged with the pub that everyone that wanted to could be seated inside but the weather was so good that in the end we took four socially distanced tables in the garden. The food was really good quality, swiftly served, thus making the stop very enjoyable.
Not wanting to change things too much, after lunch to return north we headed south, however after Mayford we climbed Hook Hill Road, (the clue is in the name) and into St John’s. Here we joined the Basingstoke Canal which we took all the way to Addlestone. This section of the ride was so pleasant in the afternoon sun that you might have somehow been transported forward in time, bypassing the Covid crisis and into next Spring!
On to Walton Bridge for well-deserved refreshments for those that wanted them.
Thanks to the sub-leaders, Christina, Tim C and Jennie and to Colin Garrod who kindly volunteered to act as back marker for my group.
A truly enjoyable day.
