Yesterday we managed to recreate the
relaxed atmosphere of the traditional Hilly 50k in a Covid-compliant
package – entry by prior booking, groups of up to 6, staggered departure times. This year we wanted to celabrate the contribution the the late Mike Morley had made to running this ride in previous years.
Covid rules meant an untraditionally early start for some, not least the organising team who braved cold winds and frosts to get the 8.30 start at Ryka’s.
Mike Morley’s son Tim organised a field of
around 25 riders departing in separate groups over the first hour, not to mention a family welcoming at the Box Hill finish.
We were also pleased to welcome Phil Matthews, stepson of Eric Flint who normally rides with the Easy Riders. A select team of Wayfarer elite riders followed.
Steve Wiltshire was delayed at the start but thankfully was able to drag me up those hills so I could perform my usual role of lanterne rouge.
The hills have not got any less of a challenge, but the potholes are fewer than last year, and it was a treat to ride in the dry.
Many thanks to Tim Court for photos, to Paul and Maggie James for help with signing in, and Terry for his support at the start.
£1,275 raised so far for St Raphael’s Hospice, and hopefully still counting.
